If you’re new to quilting, needles can seem a bit confusing—but don’t worry! We’ve got your back. Choosing the right needle is all about matching it to your fabric and the task at hand. Here's a quick guide to get you started!

Size Matters

The numbers on a needle package aren’t random. They indicate the needle’s size, and here’s the rule of thumb:

  • The smaller the number, the thinner the needle.
  • For example, a 70/10 needle is thinner than a 90/14 needle.

Use thinner needles for delicate fabrics and larger needles for heavier materials. Simple, right?

Pick the Right Type

Not all needles are created equal! Here are some of the most common types:

  • Microtex Needles: Super sharp and perfect for precision work (SCHMETZ needles are a great choice).
  • Universal Needles: Your go-to for medium-weight fabrics—versatile and reliable.
  • Embroidery Needles: Designed specifically for embroidery work to give you clean, detailed stitches.
  • Jersey/Ballpoint Needles: Made for knits, these needles glide through without snagging or breaking threads.

A Fresh Needle Makes All the Difference

One of the easiest ways to keep your sewing machine (and stitches!) running smoothly is by regularly swapping out your needle. A good rule of thumb is to replace it:

  • Every 6-8 hours of sewing
  • Or at the start of a new project

Trust us, your machine—and your fabric—will thank you.

Next time you’re at your machine, you’ll be ready to tackle your project with the perfect needle. Happy sewing! ✂️
