Description

The Wedge Ruler by Bouncing Bobbins

The Wedge Ruler is a reusable acrylic template designed to help you cut consistent wedge-shaped fabric pieces and mark design lines for quilting or piecing.

This ruler is not an angle-measuring tool. The interior slots are marking guides that allow you to create different wedge designs.

How to Use the Wedge Ruler

  1. Fold or layer your fabric or muslin so it fits beneath the ruler, leaving about 1 inch of extra fabric around all sides.
  2. Use a rotary cutter to cut around the outside edges of the ruler.
  3. Do not cut through the interior slots.
  4. Cut as many wedges as needed for your project.
  5. Use an ultra-fine permanent marker, fabric pencil, or fabric marking tool to draw through the interior slots you would like to use.
  6. Use a straight ruler to extend the marked lines until they meet at the tip of the wedge.

What Are the Interior Slots For?

The interior slots are used for marking decorative, quilting, or piecing lines. You may use one slot, several slots, or create a symmetrical or asymmetrical layout depending on your project.

The slots are not labeled with specific angles because the ruler is intended to be used as a creative marking and cutting template rather than as a protractor.

Helpful Tips

  • Test your design on scrap fabric or muslin before using your final fabric.
  • Use a sharp rotary cutter blade for clean outside edges.
  • Use non-slip ruler grips to help keep the template in place.
  • Mark only the lines you plan to use.
  • Follow the instructions for your fabric marker and test it before marking your project.
  • Use a straight ruler to extend the marked lines neatly to the wedge point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this ruler show the angle of each line?

No. The ruler is not designed to measure or identify specific angles. The interior slots are guides for creating different design lines.

Do I cut through the interior slots?

No. Cut only around the outside edges of the ruler. The interior slots are for marking only.

What should I use to mark the fabric?

You may use an ultra-fine permanent marker on muslin, or an appropriate fabric pencil or fabric marking tool on your project fabric. Always test the marking tool first.

How many wedges should I cut?

Cut the number of wedges required for your pattern or desired project layout.

Original Manufacturer Guidance

Fold muslin into layers to fit the size of the ruler with about 1 inch of excess on all sides. Cut along the outside edges using a rotary cutter. Do not cut through the inside slots. Mark the desired design lines through the slots, then use a straight ruler to extend those lines so they converge at the tip of the wedge.
